A new horror novel by California based writer Cindy Hutchins will be published online by Lyrical Press, a New York based publisher of ebooks and Print on Demand titles. The 60,000 word novella, priced at $3.50, will be available in September of 2009.
"Best Left Buried" is set in the deep south, and tells the story of a young woman named Arliss Pardot, who, because of past events, is locked into a curse: She's destined to become the watcher of an evil spirit. Haunted by birds and a series of childhood nightmares, she eventually grows up to become an ornithologist. Following the mysterious death of her mother, and being compelled by her hauntings, Arliss endeavors to find out how, and why, her mother died. When she discovers the cause of her mother's death, Arliss realizes that "Some things are best left buried. Some things won't stay down."
The book is filled with colorful characters, some heroic, some creepy, including a mysterious old man who turns out to be possessed by the ghost of Arliss' grandfather. The drama unfolds in a series of shocking events, building to a climax that leaves the reader both satisfied, and suspended in midair, craving for more. There is plenty of tension and release, frightening scenery, mysterious death and scary images along the way, befitting the tradition of the suspense and horror genre.
"Best Left Buried" is also featured on the "Dark Media Entertainment" website (www.darkmediaentertainment.com,) which was created to spotlight this, and other works by Hutchins, as well as those of a growing roster of budding writers. Hutchins writes a blog for the site, and may also be seen in an interview there, in which she explains that she wrote the story in twenty-eight days after being challenged to do so by her friend "Satan."
"I have this friend that I jokingly call 'Satan,' because she's always pestering those around her .'" says Hutchins. "She has five kids, three of them with special needs. She feels that if she has to be so busy all the time, then everyone else in her life must also be so." The challenge inspired a burst of creativity by Hutchins that spawned "Best Left Buried," a series of short stories, and another horror novel titled "Turf War," set to be published in the near future. Hutchins describes that story as "'Silence of the Lambs' meets 'Fight Club.'"
Hutchins explains her desire to write suspense and horror stories as being rooted in her North Carolina upbringing. The great festering wilderness, foggy lowlands, and ever changing light of the South ignited a lifelong interest in the genre, which has lead to a creative outburst resulting in a series of colorful works. Hutchins relocated to Simi Valley, California in 2007.
Lyrical Press placed 4th in the "Preditors & Editors" Best Book Publisher category in 2008. "Best Left Buried" may be purchased as an ebook at Lyrical Press' website, www.lyricalpress.com. Readers may also purchase the book in soft-cover for $20.00 at www.darkmediaentertainment.com. The author is available for interviews and book-signings, via the website as well.
