» Monday July 11, 2011 - 01:42 pm Comic Book Movies Dominating Social Media
The Summer of 2011 is again being dominated at the box office by super heroes. From Thor and Green Lantern to the X-Men and Captain America, movie goers are flocking to the theaters and also expressing their interest via social media channels including Twitter. Banyan Branch, a full service social media agency, has tracked the number of Tweets mentioning comic movies during the past month and the X-Men are reigning supreme, but Captain Avenger is rapidly gaining momentum as the movie's release date draws closer.
Here are more details on each of the comic movies being released this summer, as well as social media insights from Banyan Branch:
Thor: Thor kicked of the summer of superheroes on May 6. Although the film grossed nearly $67 million in the opening weekend, it still hasn't done as well as expected. Social buzz died down quickly after opening weekend, garnering just about 13% of Twitter conversation in the past month.
X-Men: First Class: The fifth movie in the X-Men franchise, X-Men: First Class was released on June 3. It grossed $55 million during opening weekend, which is far less than the previous films. In fact, it only beat the first film, which grossed $54 million in 2000. Though the movie may not have raked in the bucks like previous X-Men films, X-Men: First Class dominated in Twitter buzz, with 1.18 million tweets (or 63% of the conversation.)
Green Lantern: The Superhero Summer continues with Green Lantern, which debuted June 17th. Though the movie only generated $52.6 million in its first weekend, fans were abuzz on Twitter. 21% of the tweet conversation on superhero movies this past month focused on the Warner Bros. film.
Captain America: The First Avenger: Finishing off the quartet of superhero flicks is Captain America: The First Avenger set to open on July 22. This is another highly anticipated film by comic book fans everywhere. Buzz is already building on Twitter, with 50,000 tweets on Captain America logged in the last month.
