» Thursday September 01, 2011 - 08:04 am Corn Bred Films Embraces Social Kapitalism
Chicago-based prodco partners with startup for The Devil's Promenade. Corn Bred Films has partnered with Sokap — a pioneering new social utility that helps raise funds for projects in the movie, music, and publishing industries — to discover the truth behind the legend of The Devil's Promenade, a film that will blend traditional scripting with actor improvisation and tap deeply into traditional American folklore.
The film tells the story of "The Devil's Promenade," an abandoned Midwestern bridge where legend has it if you cross three times, the devil will appear and grant any wish your heart desires – in return for your soul. When a film crew is sent to uncover the truth behind the legend, they get more than they bargained for.
The film is a hybrid of traditional narrative storytelling and documentary "found footage."
"We've written a shooting script, but we're working with actors skilled in improvisation which allows them to make their own mark on each scene and ground the story in the real world as much as possible," Corn Bred Films co-owner Eric Anderson says. "We've also created background information for each character that only the actors playing those characters will know, which we believe will generate real sparks on screen. What we're trying to accomplish is a film that feels real…and terrifying," he adds.
The film is Sokap's first feature film launch. Anderson sees a tremendous opportunity to generate funding for The Devil's Promenade by leveraging the power of a network specifically created to "draw marketers and influencers to the best creative projects," in the words of Sokap founder Dave Geertz.
Through SoKap.com, film supporters become partners in the creative process by purchasing a license for their city or town that entitles them to a percentage of every sale and screening that occurs in their territory.
"It's great for both filmmakers and fans," says Anderson. "You can choose whatever level of involvement you'd like: you can buy physical goods like DVDs, Blu-Rays, Posters, etc. or you can purchase licenses and become like a franchisee' for the film you're supporting and even make a buck or two."
