Flanigan and Sveum Join Madison Horror Film Festival
Icon Entertainment and the Madison Horror Film Festival are proud to announce Dick Flanigan and John Sveum as additions to this year's festival. Dick and John will be doing a Q&A session at the event on Saturday October 25th.
Dick Flanigan, (aka Mr. Mephisto) was the host for 12 years of the local late night horror movie television show Lenny's Inferno. The show aired Fridays at Midnight on the NBC affiliate WMTV. And began in 1966 in Madison. The show was sponsored by American TV and Appliances.
Dick Flanigan had been WMTV's art director since 1967, and had helped Carl Ames on an earlier version of the show. His first show was on 5 September 1969.
Flanigan elected to call himself "Mr. Mephisto", based on the character from the Republic pictures serial Manhunt of Mystery Island (1945). Mr. Mephisto had a white face and a jet black goatee. After doing the first show or two alone, Flanigan decided that he needed a sidekick. He was a fan of The Addams Family and liked the character "Thing". As such he decided to use an old, dilapidated, black box, which sat on his desk. He asked John Sveum (a.k.a. Jay Stevens) to create a character. Sveum created a voice-over known as "The Voice in the Box". The voice always referred to Mr. Mephisto as "creepy guy". Using the box allowed Sveum to play other characters.
Besides films, the show also featured syndicated episodes of various old TV series including: The Twilight Zone, The Prisoner, Night Gallery, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Thriller, and The Outer Limits. It also showed serials, like Flash Gordon and The Crimson Ghost.
