From first-time director Justin Kurzel, Snowtown marks the arrival of a major new filmmaking talent. A nail-biting, emotionally compelling and a psychologically devastating account of real-life murders, Snowtown documents the true-story of John Bunting - Australia's most notorious serial killer.

Set in Adelaide, Southern Australia during the late 1990s, Bunting rallies against a nonchalant police force where paedophiles and drug addicts are free to roam the streets. Bunting takes on the role as an unsolicited vigilante for the under-classes by taking the law into his own hands and sets off on a killing spree.

Originally a native of Brisbane, Queensland, Bunting is currently serving eleven consecutive sentences of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, for his role in the killing of 11 victims, now referred to as the "Snowtown murders".

Bunting was the ringleader of what is described as a "degenerate sub-culture" of murderers. His crimes led to the longest and most expensive investigation and criminal trials in Australia's history. Bunting's targets consisted primarily of people he knew and thought to be paedophiles and homosexuals. He has been described as a skilled manipulator of people and "Australia's worst serial killer".

With an outstanding cast, made-up almost completely of newcomers, Snowtown has mesmerised viewers and critics alike. The film was honoured with the prestigious Adelaide Film Festival's Audience Award, was given the President's Special Mention at Cannes, and was officially selected for the 2011 London Film Festival.

Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Jamie (Lucas Pittaway) lives with his mother, Elizabeth, and two younger brothers in a housing trust home in Adelaide's northern suburbs. Their home is but one of many sun-starved houses crammed together to cater for a disenfranchised society. Jamie longs for an escape from the violence and hopelessness that surrounds him, and his salvation arrives in the form of John (Daniel Henshall), a charismatic father figure who unexpectedly comes to his aid.

As John spends more and more time with Jamie's family, Elizabeth and her boys begin to experience a stability and sense of family that they have never known. John moves from the role of Jamie's protector to that of his mentor, indoctrinating Jamie into a world brimming with bigotry, righteousness and malice.

Like a son mimicking his father, Jamie soon begins to take on some of John's traits and beliefs as he spends more and more time with him and his select group of friends. The protection and guidance that John presents to Jamie is initially welcomed however as events occur around him, including the disappearance of several people, Jamie begins to harbour deep suspicions about John and his motivations.

When the truth is finally revealed to Jamie, his hopes of happiness are threatened by both his loyalty for, and fear of, his new found father figure, John Bunting - Australia's most prolific and dangerous serial killer.

Think The Blair Witch Project as directed by Christopher Guest."

Born from an improv session Corn Bred filmed for a corporate client, the movie follows Dale and Darren, a pair of bumpkin brothers who've retreated to a rural farmhouse with a "camera, a small arsenal and a case of expired beans" to wait out the impending apocalypse.

"When I sat there and watched these guys — who had never met each other before that moment, mind you — improv for a half hour about surviving a zombie apocalypse it dawned on me that this could make a very funny film," said Eric Anderson, co-founder of Corn Bred Films. "I contacted actors Chris Meister and Mike Manship afterward and they were in immediately."

Filming is currently scheduled for spring/summer 2012. Plans call for the majority of the film to be shot outside Riverton, Kansas, about 10 miles from Joplin. Additional filming will take place in Chicago.

To raise the money, they're using IndieGoGo, the popular online crowdsourcing site. With 25 days to go, they've hit 20% of $10,000 goal, with the deadline to pledge falling on February 20th.

"Getting the initial $10,000 allows us to get started," said Anderson, who runs the independent film studio with his wife, Amelia Dellos. "Frankly, we will go as far as we can with it. If we can get an entire film in the can for $10,000, great. I think we can."

Meister, a self-described "classically trained actor who does the funnies on the side," said Zompocalypso is more than some zanie comedy.

"Well, it is that. But it's also about relationships and real people who have real problems who just happen to think that the world is ending."

"And it's about being OK with yourself if the end should come," he said.

And speaking of endings, Meister said in the 10-plus years he's been acting, Zompocalypso has the "best ending I've ever really come across."

"...campy as hell, full of drugs, gore, and sex, and loads of fun, but it never loses sight of the fact that interesting and ironic character dynamics are what make a film like this work... Trippin' is horror, and it is a comedy, but it is also a smart, multi-layered film which manages to avoid the genre-pandering and other pitfalls that have come to define today's horror-comedy genre." -Film Radar

"trippin' is more than the inane, generic fright fests it riffs on. It's smart, dark and cunning..." -Slammed and Damned

Javier Gutierrez To Direct The Crow

Relativity Media's Co-President, Tucker Tooley, Edward R. Pressman, producer behind the cult-classic The Crow franchise, and The Weinstein Company's Dimension Films, announced today they have closed a deal with F. Javier Gutierrez (Before The Fall) to direct a reinvention of The Crow, the 1994 smash hit film based on the comic book series and comic strip by James O'Barr. Writer Jesse Wigutow has signed on to pen the script.

Gutierrez's directorial debut, the Spanish-language apocalyptic thriller Before the Fall (Tres Dias), became an international and award-winning sensation after premiering at the Berlinale Film Festival in 2008. In Spain, the film won Best Motion Picture and Best Screenplay at the 2008 Malaga Film Festival, the Miradas Award (TVE) for Best Motion Picture of the Year, and garnered nominations from the Spain Critics Awards. In Europe, the film was a finalist for the 2008 European Film Awards and won main prizes in such science-fiction and fantasy film festivals as the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival, the Trieste Film Fesitval, and later in the U.S., picked up four awards at Los Angeles' famed Horror Festival "Scream Fest" in 2009 (for editing, Gutierrez's directing, cinematography, and actor Victor Clavijo). The film also ranked #3 on the "International Watch List 2008". Gutierrez is currently developing Dimension Films' sci-fi thriller The Greys.

Wigutow most recently did a re-write for Robert Ludlum's thriller The Osterman Weekend for Summit, and adapted the book "Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel" for Brian Oliver's Cross Creek Films. He is also developing Age Inappropriate at Universal and Irreparable Harm at HBO. Previously, he has worked on films including: Tron: Legacy, 8 Mile, Eragon, and The Ruins.

The Crow adaptation will be a gritty reboot of the iconic character Eric Draven, who returns from the grave as The Crow on a mission to avenge his wife's murder, so that his soul can finally rest. The original film is known for its breakthrough visual style as well as its unique production design and cinematography. The project is currently in development; start of production, targeted release dates and casting to be announced.

The film is being produced by Edward R. Pressman, Jeff Most and Relativity's CEO Ryan Kavanaugh. Relativity's Tooley (Immortals), The Weinstein Company's Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Farah Films' Dan Farah (Armored) will serve as executive producers.

Paradigm, Gutierrez's manager Farah, and attorney Stephen Clark of Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman, Inc. represented Gutierrez on the deal and Wigutow was represented by UTA and attorney Warren Dern of Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern LLP, and Benderspink.

Relativity recently released Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh's dynamic action-thriller Haywire in theatres. Looking ahead, Relativity will release the the heart-pounding Navy SEAL action-thriller Act of Valor (in theatres February 24, 2012) and magical adventure comedy Mirror Mirror (in theatres March 16, 2012), starring Oscar-winner Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Nathan Lane, and Armie Hammer. The studio just wrapped production on the comedy 21 and Over and is currently in pre-production on Nicholas Sparks' gripping love story Safe Haven and the international espionage thriller Hunter Killer.

Pressman is currently in development on a reinvention of the iconic action film Bloodsport written by Robert Kamen (Taken) and to be directed by Phillip Noyce (Salt). The latest feature from Pressman, The Moth Diaries, directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho), will be released by IFC Films later this year.
